What does the future hold for GKV (statutory health insurance)?

In consultation with experts from statutory health insurance (GKV), IBM, Nect and hc:Vision we got to the root of the matter.

Virtual communication and digital identities are taking up more and more space in healthcare. The coronavirus pandemic in particular has shown how important it is to be able to act digitally. We therefore invited everyone to the IBM iX Health Garage 2021 to identify and tackle the challenges of the future together.

In a virtual format, we compared notes with GKV experts about the digital transformation of the German healthcare system, the link between medicine and artificial intelligence, the Online Access Act (OZG), Nect Labor and the IBM iX Health Garage.

Here are the 6 most important insights from our panel of experts:

1 In order to increase the acceptance of digital services, the following key principles should be observed:

– Users should be able to exchange health data with digital participants
– Users should have full transparency and control over their data
– Users should be supported in real cases of use in everyday healthcare

2  When implementing digital products, the added value from the provider’s point of view should be examined carefully: How will the service be accepted? How does the service fit into my goals? When will my product be implemented? How can I measure the service?

3  Communication and interaction in healthcare will change fundamentally, e.g. in services, in telemedicine, and in the management of customer relationships. This is being accelerated by, amongst other things, new AI-based data-driven prevention and care models for the individual support of medical decisions and for the corresponding adjustment of medications and treatments (precision medicine).

4  The Online Access Act (OZG) requires the administration of health insurance companies to offer all services digitally by the end of 2022. This is only the beginning: further actions, such as register modernisation, will follow. A modular system and possible solutions, allowing for individual health insurance requirements, was presented

5  We got a glimpse into the future of the digital ID card. Nect Labor provides solutions for digital activation processes – from the Nect ID and the Nect Wallet to the integration of the new ID card with PIN function. This also includes company registration and/or the further integration of new European ID documents. With partners, we were able to handle the issue of “PIN as a service” for the eGK (electronic health insurance card) and also show integration into the hc:Vision self-service module.

6  With the IBM Garage we have introduced a space for the interdisciplinary exchange and testing of ideas and solutions. The IBM Garage methodology takes a person-centred approach to solving complex business problems using transformative methodology and technology.

We will continue to pursue innovative questions together in the new year. We are making health and digital healthcare products tangible in an interactive Health Garage session.
