Portrait Frank-Dohmen

How does an Agile Delivery Lead at IBM iX shape complex programmes, empower teams and create structures in which people can genuinely work? A day with Frank Dohmen reveals how modern leadership succeeds: clear, human and consistently user-centred.

Anyone who accompanies Frank Dohmen for a day quickly understands how much structure, clarity and human leadership are required to successfully steer complex digital programmes. For seven years, Frank has supported clients from the consumer goods sector as part of the IBM iX Consumer Cluster. The team is responsible for digital platforms, service portals and extensive e-commerce and content systems, all projects that bring together many roles, dependencies and decision paths. Frank’s task is to channel this complexity. He works with clear governance formats, cross-functional workshops and regular alignment meetings to create transparency regarding delivery scope, capacity‑ and risk.

Becoming an Agile Delivery Lead and Team Lead was not the result of a classic career plan. His “go with the flow” approach led him to a role where his pragmatism, empathy and methodological expertise create real impact. He resolves bottlenecks, strengthens teams and ensures that decisions in scaled programmes are transparent in a comprehensive way. A day with Frank demonstrates what modern leadership looks like in dynamic client environments: clear, accountable and always human‑centred.

What does an Agile Delivery Lead do at IBM iX?

07:40 – A warm start into the day

Whether in the office or at home, Frank starts his day with an ‘Early Morning Blocker’. This slot gives him the space to clear organisational tasks before client meetings begin: emails, Slack communication, team lead responsibilities and carryover topics from the previous day.  Full-time remote work would be no option for him, as exchange and a sense of belonging are essential to effective collaboration.

09:00 – Governance and problem-solving during the project day

The morning is dedicated to project focus. Frank works across programme governance, methodological consulting, spontaneous one-on-ones and alignments with client teams. Topics vary: stalled processes, missing transparency about delivery scope, performance challenges or role bottlenecks. Using structured formats, problem-solving workshops and governance routines, he helps teams identify blockers and establish a reliable basis for decision-making.

Context of his work

In the Consumer Cluster, IBM iX supports clients from the consumer goods sector and is responsible for the seamless delivery of digital platforms, service portals and complex e-commerce and content systems. Since January 2025, Frank has led an eight-person project management team supporting clients such as METRO, BARMER and Careproof.

In parallel, he works within the Industry Cluster as a work-stream Scrum Master in a scaled agile programme. He facilitates methodological and procedural workflows, applies governance formats, moderates problem-solving workshops and leads alignments between roles and programme levels. His goal: to structure complex programmes so that teams can work efficiently and decisions remain clear.

Between 12:00 and 14:00 – Flexible re‑energising

Lunchtime means pausing. When working from home, he eats mindfully with his family, a moment that grounds him. This balance enables him to start the afternoon with renewed energy for leadership and coaching.

13:00 / 14:00 – Leadership, coaching and team enablement

The afternoon focuses on conversations with his PM team. These one-on-ones range from personal check-ins to project status, workload, development planning and questions about processes. Coaching occurs through reflection, challenge and joint brainstorming. Frank also occasionally shares insights or observations through “Just a thought” articles for the‑ internal Client Excellence Community.

16:20 Closing and after work

Frank ends his workday with the ‘Office Closing Blocker’. He clears his digital desk, takes notes, sorts tasks and responds to final messages. A timed desk lamp and monitor setup help him intentionally close the day, especially when working remotely.

After work, family time takes priority. Being present, talking, unwinding. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling serve as mental reset buttons. And when energy remains, Frank dives into digital worlds as a gamer, a valued part of his personal culture.

Frank’s day shows what modern delivery at IBM iX looks like: a blend of structure, flexibility and genuine humanity. His aim is not to prescribe processes or prioritise methods, but to take accountability for teams, clients and shared goals. He makes complexity understandable, strengthens collaboration and ensures that programmes progress in a meaningful way. This mindset shapes our work at IBM iX and demonstrates how we live “Designing Tomorrow” every day.
