A Day with Kristina Sahlmann – Solution Architect at IBM iX Berlin

From early on, Kristina knew one thing: for her, technology and creativity had to go hand in hand. After completing her degree in Media Informatics, she started her career in IT consulting but something was missing. In 2012, she found what she had been looking for at IBM iX (back then still the digital agency Aperto): an environment that unites both. Three years later, she pursued her PhD and returned equipped with technical expertise, strategic thinking, and a strong sense of design. Today, she applies this knowledge in projects on cloud computing, CMS integration, and IoT for clients in sectors such as transportation, federal authorities, and health insurance.

From University to her Dream Job

As a Solution Architect, Kristina designs technical solution architectures tailored to clients’ needs and bridges development, design, and strategy. Her main focus is on CoreMedia DXP, a powerful content management system (CMS) for complex websites and digital platforms. In addition, she works on projects involving mobile apps, IoT solutions, cloud computing, identity management, and cybersecurity. She always aims to create solutions that are both technologically robust and practical in application.

Three Roles in One Job

  • The Architect: Kristina always keeps the bigger picture in mind. She ensures that different technologies interact seamlessly and form a sustainable overall architecture. Especially with CoreMedia DXP, she develops structures that not only enable complex websites and platforms but also make them future-proof.
  • The Translator: In her projects, Kristina bridges development, design, strategy, and clients. Acting as an interface, she translates technical requirements into clear roadmaps and ensures that all stakeholders align on shared goals.
  • The Enabler: As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for CoreMedia DXP, Kristina is the go-to person within the company. She shares her expertise through internal trainings and external talks and develops best practices for colleagues and clients.

What Defines the Role of a Solution Architect?

Technological depth: Kristina works with CoreMedia, cloud computing, IoT, identity management, and cybersecurity. CMS integration is a particular area of focus: she knows the technical challenges in detail, can realistically assess the effort involved, and advises clients on interfaces, automation opportunities, and project structures. This foresight makes risks visible early on and establishes a stable foundation for projects.

Client focus: In video calls and workshops, she develops realistic roadmaps together with clients. Her strength is making technical complexity understandable and preparing decisions in a way that everyone can follow. For clients, this means fewer surprises during the project and clear visibility into time and cost.
A good example is the project with Dutch Railways/ Nederlandse Spoorwegen: together with the Content Foundation team, Kristina worked on building a flexible, scalable content ecosystem with CoreMedia. In the video, they share how fragmented systems were turned into a consistent digital experience for millions of passengers.

Knowledge sharing: As SME for CoreMedia, Kristina shares her experience in internal formats such as practice meetings. These sessions include strategic input, technical insights, and concrete project examples. For her, this is a cycle: impulses from talks enrich her projects, and her project experience flows back into the community.

Team culture: Work at IBM iX thrives on interdisciplinary collaboration – designers, developers, project managers, and architects work closely together. Kristina sees this openness and exchange as a decisive success factor: different perspectives lead to better solutions, and trust within the team enables complex projects to be executed efficiently.

Digital Solutions Built with People in Mind

What Kristina values most at IBM iX – in addition to interdisciplinary collaboration – is the diversity of projects, technologies, and challenges. No two days are alike. For her, IBM iX is more than just a workplace: it is an environment shaped by collaboration, dedication, and respect.

Recognized for Commitment and Impact

For her contributions, Kristina was honored with the Outstanding Contribution Award – recognition of her exceptional leadership, long-term commitment, and impact in major CoreMedia projects across the IBM iX DACH region.
