People at the centre – at all digital touchpoints of a scalable digital service ecosystem for health

Asklepios Group is one of the largest German hospital operators, consisting of 160 facilities with around 68,000 employees. Following the successful brand relaunch in 2022, IBM iX has developed a new positioning for the group: towards an innovative, service-oriented and empathetic healthcare partner with comprehensive digital service offerings. With the new platform, Asklepios is strengthening its vision of a “Digital HealthyNear“, an excellent provider of digital health services in close proximity.

All health services of the Asklepios Group are made accessible and experienceable for patients in close proximity. Thanks to user-centred experience design and efficient, scalable content management, a digital ecosystem is created that meets the requirements of the hospital network and patients over the long term.

Core elements of the Asklepios digital hospital ecosystem

Asklepios is pursuing the vision of a digital ecosystem for health, and the aims are to

  • strenghten the perception of Asklepios as an excellent provider for digital health services in close proximity („Digital HealthyNear“).

  • increase digital interactions between user groups and the platform, and boost web conversions such as appointment and course bookings.

  • Sustainably increase the efficiency of platform operations, particularly in content maintenance and make it scalable.

User-centred transformation and innovative solutions

The starting point for the platform transformation was the actual user needs. Through the use of innovative strategies and methods, these needs were collected, prioritised and rolled out in a user-centred manner for the digital ecosystem. The various user journeys were designed in analogy to well-known checkout processes in e-commerce to convince users and sustainably increase conversion rates. The introduction of the new headless content management system (Magnolia CMS) and a central content hub ensure higher efficiency and increased flexibility. Through localisation, users can receive relevant offers in their vicinity at any time. Recurring content can be scaled across all facilities and individualised simultaneously.

Improved user experience and efficient content management for sustainable success

Thanks to a lean information architecture and familiar design patterns, the platform network provides targeted, consistent user guidance for optimal conversion. This meets the new platform‘s desired positioning as a „Digital HealthyNear“.The central content hub and the reduction and automation of tasksincrease content quality and save time when maintaining content. A complete facility website can be created within minutes. Furthermore, the headless approach lays the foundation for distributing content across the entire Asklepios ecosystem in the future.

Intuitive digital booking of appointments

Thoughtful user guidance allows access to all appointment schedules anywhere, anytime, with just one clickwhether through navigation or contextual teasers.Users receive suitable appointment suggestions in their region, which they can directly book and link conveniently to their booking account with the service provider for online scheduling. The contrasting design and conversion-optimised booking process are accessible for everyone and quickly lead to the goal.

Asklepios' digital transformation at a glance

Consistent, efficient content management through a centralised content hub

The new Content Hub of Asklepios Clinics ensures consistency in recurring content across more than 170 facilities. The appearance can be set centrally according to facility type and then broadcast to an unlimited number of facilities.Global health content can be quickly and efficiently combined with offers and content from the facility context. Adjustments can be made both centrally for all facilities and individually for each facility. What used to require manual changes on a multitude of similar pages can now be adapted centrally and automatically. The headless architecture also promotes efficient rendering – even in external systems outside of the websites of asklepios.com.

Faster processing thanks to flexible text blocks and a suitable taxanomy

The platform offers an intuitive user interface and an optimal content structure with a flexible, scalable taxonomy. This includes all content, from appointment schedules to medical experts. The hierarchically organised list describes and classifies content for theme-based, dynamic rendering on different page types. The dynamic tagging system allows editors to use global content more efficiently and to expand it with local content – external costs are reduced and editorial care is automated. The new taxonomy also has a positive impact on search engine optimisation: it improves the discoverability of content and prevents duplication.

Closer to patients thanks to localised rendering of content and offers

The targeted use of location data ensures that all visitors to the corporate websites always receive suitable content and offers tailored to their respective locations. This includes localised offers such as appointment schedules, clinics and facilities, job postings or events. The collection of location data complies with data protection requirements and is only done with prior consent. A central information page ensures transparency: users can learn about the location capture, manually change their location and deactivate location sharing. The localised rendering increases the relevance of the content for users, thereby improving the user experience.
