BARMER Health Services reimagined — intelligent and digital

BARMER has fundamentally redesigned its digital services with the help of IBM iX. The result: a smart, modern brand experience based on a powerful design system.

With over 8 million policyholders, BARMER is one of the largest statutory health insurance companies in Germany. Like the entire industry, it faces major challenges: increasing cost pressure, demographic changes and growing digital expectations from policyholders. And BARMER has reacted to this.

New brand, new BARMER: the start of a digital ecosystem

With the relaunch of BARMER.de and the member area Meine BARMER Web in November 2025, the company presents itself as younger, fresher and significantly more user-friendly. The new user experience is intuitive, accessible and consistently tailored to the needs of policyholders.

In the new member area, you can handle your insurance matters smartly and efficiently, such as granting powers of attorney, applying for child sickness benefits or submitting invoices. Language and processes were also simplified to make the digital services as user-friendly as consumer apps.

My BARMER: smart, young and family-friendly

The relaunch in 2025 was only the beginning. In 2026, Meine BARMER will follow with all digital services for insurance matters, processes and communication, also as an app for smartphones and tablets. Built on the same technical foundation and seamlessly merged into a single product, Meine BARMER is available via app and web, covering all services and processes.

Insured parties receive digital letters in their mailbox, submit applications directly online and can always check the current processing status in Kompass. For example, they can find out the status of the orthodontic treatment of co-insured children, whether sick pay or child sickness benefits have already been paid out, or the status of their maternity benefit application. To receive up to €200 in top cash bonuses per year, policyholders can quickly and easily upload certificates, all on the web or via the Meine BARMER app on smartphone or tablet. A consistent new experience, no matter the platform.

A new digital ecosystem for self-determined health management

Teledoktor as central apps for personal health management and digital healthcare in 2026.

BARMER eCare allows policyholders to view the documents added by doctors after treatments, organise them independently, redeem electronic prescriptions, keep track of their medications, view lab results, manage their vaccination status and preventive medical check-ups or chat with doctors’ offices and BARMER.

With the Teledoktor app, they can attend video consultations with doctors and, if needed, receive a sick note, prescription or certificate for child sickness benefits. In addition, the app offers a medical advice hotline and a scheduling service for quick specialist appointments.

Together with BARMER.de and Meine BARMER on web and app, this creates a new digital ecosystem that supports policyholders in all situations, from the simple handling of insurance matters to self-determined provision and care in case of illness.

Design system as the basis for consistent, scalable and user-centric services

A comprehensive design system forms the basis of the new brand image, assuring consistency, scalability and efficiency across all products and platforms. It comprises 80 components that utilise the design in Figma and employ technical development as a tested, accessible code in React, Swift and Jetpack Compose.

Design tokens centrally control colours, spacing and typography across design and code, which is a key lever for digital rebranding. The system is complemented by custom icons, pictograms and an illustration language specifically developed for BARMER, which puts the focus on diversity and empathy with almost 200 different motifs.

The rebranding of the design system creates a new brand experience with significantly increased efficiency. The reusable components reduce design effort by 60% and front-end development effort by over 40%.

Centrally coordinated, cross-channel programme management for a strong brand identity

Together with BARMER, IBM iX is responsible for the central programme management, bundling all measures, coordinating teams and ensuring a consistent experience of the new brand identity—from the website and the Meine BARMER member area to the Meine BARMER app, BARMER eCare and BARMER Teledoktor.

Programme management includes coordinating multiple stakeholders, managing external service providers and establishing clear governance structures. It is only through this central framework that design, technology and organisation can be efficiently combined and implemented it in an integrated manner.

The result: a consistent, fresh and smart digital BARMER experience.
